Have you had a dental splint done? Just received it? Congratulations! Our dentists aim to make wearing dental splints as comfortable as possible. Below are the most important points for taking care of your dental appliance (your splint) from Dentist Brisbane Follow these instructions to be able to use you splint for a long time.

Dental Splints Discolourations

Certain foods or drinks can affect the colour of your splints. including but not limited to:

  • Nicotine
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Coke

Consumption of these foods or beverages can affect the colour of your splints very quickly. While you have the appliance in your mouth, try to avoid these as much as possible and try to consume clear water if you can.

Dental Splints and Organic Solvents

Avoid organic solvents for cleaning your dental splints. Organic Solvents include:

  • Alcohol
  • Acetone
  • Essential Oils
  • Herbal Oils
  • Some Oral Medicines

Some medicines that are used for treatment of oral inflammation can lead to discolouration of your splint as well.

Dental Splints and Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings, metallic dentures and inlays or any metal alloy with reduced precious metal components can cause splint discoloration.

Dental Splints and Cleaning

Cleaning the splint will increase the life of your splint. Clean your splint everyday using manufacturer’s recommended solutions. Some dentists have these solution for sale or they may be able to order it in for you from a supplier. You cam also clean your splint using a soft toothbrush, lukewarm water and toothpaste.

Clean your splint prior to and after wearing it. Remove any film and Saliva. Rinse your mouth thoroughly before inserting the splint into your mouth.

Leave your split to dry completely before putting it into its container.

Dental Splints and Don'ts

  • Do not use hot water to wash your splint.
  • Do not use Ultrasound cleaning
  • Do not use steam cleaning

Temperatures above 40C can cause your splint to deform. Do not leave your splints under the sun and on hot surfaces of your car.
