Keep Your Teeth Healthy With Regular Dental Checkups

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

A regular dental checkup is essential for maintenance of your oral and general health.

This is a regular dental visit that should vary from every 3 months to once a year depending on your oral health status.

Regular dental checkups are important to prevent the oral diseases occurring, early detection of oral diseases, to monitor self care, and to treat any existing problems.

During a dental check up you should expect the dentist to update your dental and medical history; look for and treat any dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease; perform prophylactic procedures such as scaling and polishing to prevent oral diseases; give relevant advice on good oral hygiene practice such as reinforcement on tooth brushing and flossing techniques, dietary habits, smoking cessation, also can refer you to a medical doctor, dental specialist or dental hygienist if necessary.

Taking care of your teeth helps prevent plaque, which is a clear film that sticks to your teeth. The film itself might not appear to present any immediate problems, but it serves to provide a very sticky surface area that then acts like a magnet for bacteria and sugar which can damage your teeth by eating away at tooth enamel, causing holes called cavities. Plaque also causes gingivitis which is gum disease.

Because your teeth are important in numerous ways, if you take care of them, they will take care of you. Healthy, strong teeth help you chew the right food, help you grow, help you speak clearly and also help you look your best.

Be sure to make your regular dental check ups and remember to brush and floss daily and also eat healthy to maintain oral health and teeth.
